Practical Diary - 16th March 2007

In the last lesson i had planned to apply a layer of varnish to my chair. When the lesson begun we started by discussing the diffrent finishes given by diffrent products. We looked at vanishes like MDF seal, PVA glue and Sand seal. They all gave relitivley good finishes but it was agreed that the sand seal gave the best finish. I begun work by rubbing of any pencil markings before watching a demonstration of the seal being applied. I started varnishing mine and had fully varnished all my peices. I then to get a better finish used wet and dry sand paper to get a smooth finish by taking of any lumpy patches. This then took me to and past the end of the lesson. The next lesson i plan to add another layer of varnish and then sand it down ready for a 3rd layer.

Practical Diary - 12th March 2007

In this lesson i planned on having my chair of a high quality, ready for sanding down. I begun the lesson promptly and set work on smoothing of the edges. I began using a file to make the slots a little wider so the slots fit togehter with a bit more ease, as the vanish will add thickness. I then also used sand paper to make the edges of the chair very smooth and then rounded of the corners to make the chair more ergonomic for children. In the next lesson i plan to varnish my chair as it is ready for this process.

Practical Diary - 9th March 2007

In the last lesson i had just started cutting out my second side peice and was ready to finish it of and increase the overall quality of the finish. I started the lesson by finishing the work started previously, which was cutting out the side peice. I did this but not very well. Because i didnt do it very well, as i didnt cut very close to the line, I had a lot of sanding to do and this took up the majority of the lesson, trying to make the to peices identical. At the end of this lesson my chair fully worked, but still needed to be smoothed down and varnished. In the next lesson i plan to compleley sand it down and have it ready for sanding.

Practical Diary - 5th March 2007

Last lesson i had planned to sand down and then draw and create a duplicate side peice. I then got to wor and after about 10 minutes of hard work sanding i managed to get it so all the tabs fitted into the slots tightley. This worked out well and then I touched up the edges by smoothing of the side peice, seat peice and back peice. After this I then sanded down my side edge corners into nice curved corners. After this i then drew out and cut out the second side peice peice and started to file down but the lesson ended. I aim to in the next lesson to have completley sanded down my second side peice and have the chair completley assembled ready for painting. This includes creating a decent finish.

Pracitcal Diary - 2nd March 2007

Last lesson I had planned to have all my peices cut out and have my duplicate cut out for the next lesson. I had'nt quite finished this objective by the end of the lesson. I started the lesson by using the scroll tennon saw to cut out the slot which i had drilled in the last lesson. This tokk a bit longer than suspected and then to file down to get the slots to fit together nicely to about 30 minutes. Then i cut out the first of my side peices and cut out the tabs. The slots were too small to fit the tabs so i started on sanding down these edges with a file but the lesson ended before i could finish. The next lesson i plan on finishing the sanding down and then draw out and create a duplicate side peice.

Practical Diary - 16th February 2007

Last lesson i discovered that i had not fully marked out my work so in the first half of the lesson I had to change my plan on the MDF. I had this fully completed by the first hlaf of the lesson. Then i set to work on cutting out my design. I cut out the design iinto majorparts and then managed to trim down the seat and the back part of my design carefully and then drill into a space for one of the tabs. I was about the cut out the middle slot for the tab to go in but run out of timeFor the next lesson i plan to have all my peices cut out and sanded neatley then draw round the side peice to create a duplicate side peice.

Practical Diary - 12th February 2007

My plan for this lesson was to have all my peices fully marked out on the MDF so i could begin next lesson by cutting out my peices. I started the lesson quite quickly and got down to my work. I ran into many mistakes while marking out my MDF, due to simple errors. These simple errors such as forgeting to double measurements to make it 1/2 sized and not using my MDF as efficiently as possible delayed me a lot but by the end of the lesson i had correctly marked out my MDF ready for the next lessonIn the next lesson i plan to have all my peices fully cut out of the MDF and prefrably sanded aswell.
